MARCH 2020 NEWSLETTER

The last SIX SPOTS of our Spring Cookbook Club are now open. Please visit the EVENT for details before proceeding. We’ve had a month fill with book clubs and we were able to interview an author (see below). One of our favorite book clubs is the Book Talk Book Club. Biography/Memoirs Book Club will now be part of Nonfiction Book Club since that club does biographies, memoirs, and nonfiction. We will have TWO new book clubs bringing our total up to 14 BOOK CLUBS in April! Romance Book Club and Page to Screen Book Club.

INTERVIEW WITH TWELVE NIGHTS AT ROTTER HOUSE AUTHOR J.W. OCKER

Can you share your writing process for this book? The writing process itself was pretty straightforward. The process to get to the writing was pretty curvy though. It started as a nonfiction idea (at the time I wrote mostly creepy nonfiction, like Felix) and I even had the house picked out (The S.K. Pierce Mansion in Gardner, Massachusetts), but I realized that if I stayed in a haunted house for two weeks by myself, it would end up being a boring book (most real-life book accounts of haunted houses leave a lot to be desired). So I thought I’d try my hand at turning the idea into adult fiction. At the time, I’d only written one other novel, a middle-grade book called Death and Douglas, about a boy who lives in a funeral home, and the serial killer who keeps filling his morgue. Before I could write Word 1, though, I needed an ending–that’s usually my way. The ending came to me randomly one day while driving around or something, and that was enough to sit down and start writing. But before and during that time, I was also reading every haunted house novel I could get my hands on (I already had a pretty good grasp of haunted house movies), both to make sure I wasn’t treading down an already trod path, but also because I knew it was going to be a little meta.

What book changed your life? So many have, honestly (I go through a lot of changes. Ha.). The Hobbit probably put me on the course to being a reader. Poe’s The Raven, while not a book, is still a work that put me on a course to being a writer. Either Something Wicked This Way Comes or Dandelion Wine, both by Ray Bradbury (I can’t remember which I read first) changed me, gave me a paragon of pure joy at writing and wonder at living that is something I’ve always aiming for (and missing).

You made a number of horror literary and film references in the book so we have to narrow this down and see if your taste matches Felix. Favorite Horror Book (ok or a few of them) and favorite horror movie (or movies) so we can all have a horror movie marathon? For horror books, it would be The Late Great Creature, Something Wicked This Way Comes, and The Haunting of Hill House. For movies, it’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Psycho, and Scream

What are you currently reading/watching? Currently reading The Sparrow, by Mary Doria Russell, and currently watching Star Trek: Picard. So science fiction all around somehow.

What scares you? Loneliness and bad stuff happening to my family. Boring adult fears, basically.

Ok I know this might be somewhere on your blog but I of course I need to ask if you had to choose are you more like Felix or Thomas, Mulder or Scully? Are you a believer? Have you had an encounter with the paranormal? I’m Felix/Scully. I don’t believe in much these days, but I do love spooky stories. I’ve also been to a ton of places where you’re supposed to have encounters and just haven’t (overnights in cemeteries and abandoned prisons, lonely vigils in old asylums, etc.). I think I’m sadder about that than Felix or Scully, though.

If you had to choose a song to associate with Twelve Nights at Rotter House what would it be? The Odd Couple theme song? Ha. Maybe “Our House,” by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young.

Were there any alternative endings? No, the ending really was the catalyst to actually sit down and write the book. That was the clue I had an actual story. Without it, I’d never have written the book. I do have a possible sequel in my head, though.

Can you share a little about what you’re currently working on? Sure! I’m juggling editing and writing currently. Final edits on my nonfiction book “Cursed Objects” (due out this September from Quirk), beginning edits on my middle-grade horror novel “The Smashed Man of Dread End” (out in summer 2021 from Harper Collins), and I’m currently in-process on writing my next adult horror novel. It’s a cosmic horror story that takes place on a Christian college campus in Florida in the 1990s. Like “Twelve Nights,” there’s a lot taken from my life for it.

INSIDE THE WRITER’S MIND (QUESTIONS BORROWED FROM JAMES LIPTON)
What is your favorite word? – Graveyard
What is your least favorite word? – Cute
What turns you on? Mystery and enthusiasm
What turns you off? Boredom
What sound or noise do you love? – Fans. Can’t sleep without one. Sometimes like to work to the sound of fan, too.
What sound of noise do you hate? – Anything body-related.
What is your favorite curse word? Hell – So much more evocative than all the other ones.
What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? – Residential construction. I feel like if you can build a house, you can do anything.
What profession would you not like to do? – Anything finance-based. Being good at money for money’s sake feels like a bummer (but has its perks, I’m sure!)
