Sci-Fi/Fantasy Book Club (REMOTE)

The Books Around the Corner Science Fiction/Fantasy Book Club meets monthly on the second Tuesday of every month at 6PM. We would like to extend an invitation to all of our science fiction and fantasy loving customers (RSVP is not required). It will alternate monthly between Science Fiction and Fantasy.

Our book discussions aim to bring people together to talk about books in a safe and inviting atmosphere. Our meetings are lovely and inclusive; we invite you to attend. Come and enjoy a lively discussion about the chosen book with other readers.

Join us Tuesday October 13th for our Books Around the Corner Sci-Fi/Fantasy Book Club. October will be a Sci-Fi Pick.

We will discuss Goldilocks by Laura Lam.

About the Book:

A gripping science fiction thriller where five women task themselves with ensuring the survival of the human race – if you mixed “…The Martian and The Handmaid’s Tale, this sci-fi novel would be the incredible result” (Book Riot).

Despite increasing restrictions on the freedoms of women on Earth, Valerie Black is spearheading the first all-female mission to a planet in the Goldilocks Zone, where conditions are just right for human habitation.

It’s humanity’s last hope for survival, and Naomi, Valerie’s surrogate daughter and the ship’s botanist, has been waiting her whole life for an opportunity like this – to step out of Valerie’s shadow and really make a difference.

But when things start going wrong on the ship, Naomi begins to suspect that someone on board is concealing a terrible secret – and realizes time for life on Earth may be running out faster than they feared . . .

November 10th will be a Fantasy Pick.

Join us on Tuesday November 10th at 6pm for our Books Around the Corner Sci-Fi/Fantasy Book Club.

We will discuss The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern.

About the book:

A  timeless love story set in a secret underground world–a place of pirates, painters, lovers, liars, and ships that sail upon a starless sea.

Zachary Ezra Rawlins is a graduate student in Vermont when he discovers a mysterious book hidden in the stacks. As he turns the pages, entranced by tales of lovelorn prisoners, key collectors, and nameless acolytes, he reads something strange: a story from his own childhood. Bewildered by this inexplicable book and desperate to make sense of how his own life came to be recorded, Zachary uncovers a series of clues–a bee, a key, and a sword–that lead him to a masquerade party in New York, to a secret club, and through a doorway to an ancient library hidden far below the surface of the earth. What Zachary finds in this curious place is more than just a buried home for books and their guardians–it is a place of lost cities and seas, lovers who pass notes under doors and across time, and of stories whispered by the dead. Zachary learns of those who have sacrificed much to protect this realm, relinquishing their sight and their tongues to preserve this archive, and also of those who are intent on its destruction. Together with Mirabel, a fierce, pink-haired protector of the place, and Dorian, a handsome, barefoot man with shifting alliances, Zachary travels the twisting tunnels, darkened stairwells, crowded ballrooms, and sweetly soaked shores of this magical world, discovering his purpose–in both the mysterious book and in his own life.
